She was a painter, a writer, a dancer...reckless and full of life.
( in a slightly unrelated parallel, since this is "secrets about secrets" I was born in a zero year and married at 19, spent time in an institution for an eating disorder and am an artist and writer.. love all aspects of dance.....and have done seemingly reckless things throughout my life)

Some of her quotes....my favorites...
" It's very expressive of myself. I just lump everything in a great heap which I have labeled "the past," and, having thus emptied this deep reservoir that was once myself, I am ready to continue. "
~ how to handle life....
"I wish we could spend July by the sea, browning ourselves and feeling water-weighted hair flow behind us from a dive. I wish our gravest concerns were the summer gnats. I wish we were hungry for hot dogs and dopes, and it would be nice to smell the starch of summer linens and the faint odor of talc in blistering summer bath houses... We could lie in long citoneuse beams of the five o'clock sun on the plage at Juan-les-Pins and hear the sound of the drum and piano being scooped out to see be the waves."
~ wonderful imagery...
"Nobody has ever measured, not even poets, how much the heart can hold."
~so true, I love people I've lost, babies and foster children with more intensity that I would have thought possible. Even when entirely broken, shattered - the heart still holds immense quantities of love

and finally, Zelda nailed it when she said this...
"I am really only myself when I'm somebody else
whom I have endowed with these wonderful qualities from my imagination."
This is a trait of creatives, sometimes it seems we have to play make-believe just to be who we are. Yes, it sounds crazy. I am not denying it. But nothing sounds truer than crazy sometimes.
In thinking about Zelda and her tragic story, I am more grateful for my supportive family and friends. 'nuf said.
An interesting character that I will have to investigate more deeply.
ReplyDeleteI have the book Zelda, but I haven't read it yet. I feel like it is a book that I want to open one day when I can truly devote myself to learning more about the life and truly feel everything there was there. I know enough of the basics to know that her biography would merit that.
ReplyDeleteThis woman is someone unknown to me, but very compelling! Thanks for sharing these quotes! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how she is viewed evolved over time. Sometimes I think we find our reality in the make-believe because it's the only place we can be ourselves-unjudged. Other times I think envisioning binds us and the creating sets us free.
